Interior Design of a 500 sqm Apartment in the Heart of Milan
In the vibrant heart of Milan’s historic center, Matteo Nunziati, in collaboration with Turri, has crafted an interior design project that transcends the idea of a home—it's a visual and sensory narrative, a delicate balance between memory and modernity.
The guiding concept is a deep dialogue between architecture and furnishings: bookcases, wall panels, and cladding blend seamlessly with sofas, tables, chairs, and storage units. Each piece finds its place like a note in a musical score, in a symphony of materials, forms, and proportions.
The inspiration is drawn from the composed grandeur and refined elegance of Milan’s 1930s residences, in particular the poetic rationalism of Piero Portaluppi. From him, Nunziati captures the spirit of balance, precision, and a timeless aesthetic. Resonating throughout the space is one of Portaluppi’s most iconic statements:
"Architecture is not made to astonish, but to endure through time."
This principle is embodied in every corner of the apartment: beauty that doesn't scream, but quietly remains.
The color palette is warm and enveloping, composed of soft tones that instill a sense of serenity. The flooring, in light travertine—one of the most prestigious marbles, sourced from selected quarries and finished with a subtle matte polish—leads gracefully into the expansive living area. Here, eucalyptus wood panels line the walls, framing a striking custom-made bookcase with a wooden structure, vertical travertine dividers, and a leather-clad backrest stitched with elegant vertical quilting—echoing a sartorial sensibility.
Opposite, the formal dining area is centered around a round table, enclosed by panels in woven leather and illuminated by a bronze chandelier designed by Nunziati for Tato: a sculptural and atmospheric light source.
Grand portals clad in bronzed metal frame the passageways between rooms like theatrical wings, while in the more informal family dining space, a raw travertine feature wall—intentionally left with its natural imperfections—adds a tactile, organic depth, creating a refined yet earthy backdrop.
In the sleeping quarters, the atmosphere becomes more intimate. The headboard wall is dressed in finely quilted leather panels, framing the bespoke atelier bed designed by Nunziati himself, forming a harmonious dialogue between design and serenity.
This project is the epitome of discreet luxury—never ostentatious, always intentional. Every detail is designed to evoke emotion and stand the test of time, to surprise without spectacle. It is a space where aesthetics and function converge, and where everyday life unfolds within a calm, ordered, and deeply human environment.
A home that tells the story of Milan—its history, its elegance, and its quiet yearning for eternity.
